On 17 September 2026, students from India and Japan came together for an engaging exchange on individual AI literacy and responsible AI use, connecting the Japanese Student Community facilitated through NICT, Japan, with the Indian Student Community, the India chapter of the Commonwealth Student Community for AI Governance, facilitated through Commonwealth of Learning-Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (COL-CEMCA).

The exchange centred on the students’ “AI Use Rules”, exploring how AI can support learning and research while preserving human judgement, critical thinking, creativity and originality. Students also discussed AI dependency, verification of AI-generated information, data privacy and responsible use in academic and research settings.

While students approaches reflected different experiences, several common principles emerged:

🔹 Keep human judgement at the centre: think independently and retain human decision-making throughout the process.

🔹 Verify before you trust: critically review AI outputs and cross-check information with reliable sources.

🔹 AI should support, not replace, learning: use AI as an assistant while retaining the ability to understand and undertake the task independently.

🔹 Protect your data: be mindful of what information is shared with AI systems, particularly sensitive or unpublished information.

🔹 Keep your contribution your own: preserve human creativity, originality and personal voice in AI-assisted work.

This exchange marks another step in building meaningful connections between student communities and creating spaces for young people to contribute their perspectives to the evolving conversation on responsible AI and AI governance.
