Commonwealth of Learning-Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (COL-CEMCA) was formally invited to contribute its knowledge and experience to the capacity-building programme titled “The Role of Law Librarians in the Era of AI” for the Officers and Officials of the Judges’ Library of the Supreme Court of India, on 7 August 2026.

The session provided an opportunity to examine the emerging role of artificial intelligence in legal information and judicial systems. Dr B. Shadrach, Director, COL-CEMCA, delivered a session on the changing role of law librarians in an AI-enabled environment. He highlighted the importance of human oversight and verification, and the evolving responsibilities of library professionals in supporting the reliable, ethical and secure use of AI in judicial settings.

As part of the session, Gabrielle Boily, a member of the Commonwealth Student Community for AI Governance and a Master’s student at Université Laval, Canada, shared a case study from her research on AI-supported judicial decision-making. Her presentation examined the use of an AI-based decision-support system, Cognitive Shadow, in the context of the Administrative Housing Tribunal in Quebec.

Gabrielle’s participation brought a young researcher’s perspective and an international case study into the discussions with the Officers and Officials of the Judges’ of the Supreme Court of India. Her participation reflected one of the many ways the student members of the Commonwealth Student Community for AI Governance are currently contributing their knowledge, ideas, experience and research to wider discussions on the societal and institutional implications of AI nationally and internationally.
