The Cyprus Student Cohort of the Commonwealth Student Community for AI Governance was launched through a virtual convening on 21 August 2026, bringing together students from across the country to establish a platform for student engagement on AI governance. With the launch of the Cyprus cohort over 23 commonwealth nations have joined the initiative with multiple student communities established across the commonwealth.

In his address, Dr. B. Shadrach, Director, COL-CEMCA, spoke about the evolving AI landscape in Cyprus and the growing role of AI in education, research, public governance and the workplace. He noted that students are already engaging with AI through university programmes, research and technology initiatives, while also facing concerns around language bias, false-positive AI detection, declining foundational skills, data privacy and the automation of entry-level jobs.

He encouraged students to take an active role in AI governance, including by bringing together perspectives from technology, law, communication, public policy and other disciplines, and by developing policy briefs, technical papers and other contributions that can inform national, regional and international discussions.

The launch also connected the new cohort with students from existing Commonwealth communities, with participants sharing experiences of student-led work on AI governance, policy advocacy and collaboration. Discussions emphasised that students can contribute not only to conversations within their own countries but also to wider international dialogue, drawing on their local experiences and connecting them with perspectives from across the Commonwealth.

The growing network now connects students across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Europe, creating opportunities for cross-country exchange, collaboration and collective student engagement on AI governance.
