Workshop on ICT Integrated Teacher Education-11-15 March 2013, IGNOU, New Delhi

New Delhi; 08/03/2013: /The Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) in collaboration with Distance Education Programme-Sarv Siksha Abhiyan (DEP-SSA), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will be organizing a five-day workshop on information and communication technology (ICT) integrated teacher education for select teacher educators from the northern India from 11-15 March 2013 at the IUC-TEFED Multimedia Lab at the headquarters of IGNOU. The objective of the workshop is to provide skill training on the appropriate use of ICTs in the teacher education programmes, and foster a continuous professional development model for teacher education. Distance Education Programme (DEP) is a major intervention under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. IGNOU’s DEP-SSA is implementing the programme through effective application of ICT in teacher training with functionaries of DIETs, SCERT and district level resources.

While there are greater demands on quality teachers, it is necessary that teacher educators are equipped with appropriate tools and technologies to harness the potentials of ICTs for improving the quality of teacher training.  Considering the significance of quality teacher education and the needs expressed by stakeholders in the Asian Commonwealth region, CEMCA is engaged in developing a continuous professional development model for developing ICT competencies of teacher educators. Under this activity, CEMCA is developing a resources book to illustrate the theoretical models of ICT integration in teacher capacity building, and also developing an online Community of Practice (CoP) for teacher educators. The CoP which will be demonstrated and used in the 5 day workshop is being developed by IT for Change, a Bangalore based NGO active in ICT capacity building for teachers in Karnataka and south India.

The skill training on ICT will cover various facets of teaching and learning, and how teacher educators can optimize the potentials of ICTs. The participants in the workshop will be from the English Language Teaching background and the workshop while focussing on ICTs in general will emphasize specially on English language training. The Commonwealth of Learning has developed resources for English Language teaching available as Open Educational Resources (OER), which will also be used in the workshop as example. It is expected that post-workshop, the participants will use the CoP for sharing their innovations, ideas, and experiences to enrich their professional practices and engage in continuous professional development. The resource book being developed at CEMCA will also be distributed online as OER.
