Smart and Future agro-farming: opportunities for sustainability targeting SDGs

According to a new market intelligence report by BIS Research, the global smart farming market is expected to reach $23.14 billion by 2022, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.3% from 2017 to 2022.

The market growth is primarily attributed to the increasing demand for higher crop yield, the growing penetration of information and communication technology (ICT) in farming, and the increasing need for climate-smart agriculture. But the awareness and knowledge about newer agriculture technology are yet to spread extensively, especially in emerging countries.

To overcome this knowledge gap, Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) supported Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, Bangladesh for organising an online capacity building program for upskilling agriculture faculties of Bangladesh to learn and implement “Smart and Future agro-farming: opportunities for sustainability targeting SDGs”. This workshop was held between 17th to 26th June 2021.

The online capacity building program provided a platform to the leading academicians and undergraduate/post graduate students in agriculture to brainstorm and develop climate vulnerability proof farming models, with adequate interconnectedness and supply chain visibility, both upstream and downstream. To continue the learning and association, CEMCA and SAU plan to offer an online course on “Sensor Based Technology in Agriculture and Allied Sciences” in coming days.
