Employability Skill Training in Sri Lanka

A study conducted by Euromonitor, (a leading research organisation into the economic impact) stated that learning English and employability skills in developing countries can increase the earning power of individuals by around 25%.

Dwelling down further, Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) conducted a series of online discussions in Sri Lanka with various stakeholders including Sri Lankan youth & skill ministry officials, NGOs and job aspirants followed by a baseline surveys conducted in Sri Lankan rural and semi- urban areas to understand the skill gap of youths in terms of employability skill, communication and spoken English. Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) observed that to fill in the skill gap there is a need of good quality life skill training program blended with spoken English which may improve the employability status of youths.

Hence, aligned to its strategic plan (2021-27) CEMCA supported a local NGO in Sri Lanka to mobilize and enroll 250 marginalized community youths (Female-185, Male-65) in online employability skill and spoken English course linked to labour market needs.

This course was conducted via zoom platform from November 2021 to January 2022 in batches by Sri Lankan trainers. The course consists of modules of Effective Communication Skills, IT & Computer literacy, Interview Skills, CV Preparation, Teamwork and Leadership, Time management, Personality Development, professionalism and work ethics, Effective Planning and Spoken English.
