Capacity Building Workshop on Community Radio - Tool for Community Development in India on October 22, 2019 in USI, New Delhi


A one day capacity building workshop on using Community Radio as a tool of Community Development was organized by CEMCA at New Delhi on 22 nd October 2019.

The workshop was attended by 36 participants from the community radio stations in 6 states and one union territory. The states were Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi.

The objective of the workshop was to sensitize the CR stations to exploit/utilise the possibilities of CR medium for education and to share the possibility of imparting various skills through CR.

The participants were given an insight on the following topics - Status of CR in India with specific reference to North Zone, Imparting Education through CR, CEMCA’s REL - Course & its Implementation , CR Changing Lives through Skills and Enhancing Local Skills.

The Resource persons constituted two experts – Prof. Madhu Parhar, Director, CEMCA and Ms. Pooja Murada, Alfaz e Mewat CR and Director, Communications, SEHGAL Foundation, Gurgaon. Ms. Pooja Murada spoke on the need for content sharing. She also added the need for creating interdependence with community and fellow community radio stations.

Prof. Madhu Parhar explained the different ways in which a community radio can be used to promote higher education. She motivated the CR stations to take forward the initiatives implemented by Government of India to promote the education of children in their communities.

Ms. Arthi, Alfaz e Mewat CR and Dr. Sanjay Ahirwal, Dean, School of Journalism & Mass Communication, Apeejay Stya University, Sohna gave an overview of CEMCA’s Radio Enabled Learning Course REL and encouraged the CR practitioners to benefit from this diploma course.

Ms. Pooja Murada spoke on the Role of Community Radio in enhancing the local Skills of the specific community and Dr. Monica Nagpal, Project Coordinator, CEMCA explained in detail the bamboo project. She shared the role of CR in enhancing the bamboo skills for better employability and entrepreneurship.

The outcome of this one-day capacity building workshop are as follows:

  • Development of a common experience sharing online platform for CRS in Northern India.
  • Workshop on content specific CR programme to be organised for CR stations.
